BLED - BOHINJ – VINTGAR GORGE

Departure from Ljubljana on Gorenjska highway towards »the jewel of Slovenian Alps«, the city of Bled. After arrival we take a short drive around lake Bled and take a guided walk up to the castle above Bled which dates back to the eleventh century (A.D.). The mighty castle domi-nates the Bled skyline and displays a majestic view on the Slovenian landscape below. After the castle tour we’ll head down to the lake and take a ride with a »Pletna«, which is a typical boat in Bled and take a look at the island in the middle of the lake with a church on it. The tour continues to the biggest glacier lake in the heart of the Julian Alps, lake Bohinj, above which dominates the highest Slovenian peak Triglav (Threeheaded). After a fifteenminute long walk, we’ll arrive at the spring of the river Sava Bohinjka, there we take a stroll around the lake. After the walk, lunch break follows at one of the local inns. After lunch, we head offto Vintgar, couple of kilometers away from Bled, where we’ll take a walk along one point six kilometer long beautiful river valley, which was shaped by the river Radovna. Our tour ends at the waterfall Šum (Noise). Gathering at the bus and drive back to Ljubljana.

Bled was introduced in the mini guide »101 Romantic Getaways«, because there exists no such traveller, who would not fall in love with this Slovenian alpine pearl.
Bathing tourism started to develop in Bled in 1854 and since then visitors have observed with enthusiasm the sight of the Bled castle, rising in its mightiness above lake Bled, in the middle of which there is an island with a church in the middle. Boat ride on the lake is very ro-mantic, and so is ringing the bell of wish-es in the church.

After the tour there is a »must be« taste of the unique desert – a culinary sym-bol of Bled. Bled cream cake can also be bought elsewhere, but the real, Bled one, can only be tasted in Bled.In the last 40 years 7 million cream cakes were sold in Bled.

Bled Vintgar Gorge is one of the most popular natural features in Slovenia. The gorge has been arranged for visitors for more than a hundred years. Along the narrow passage, where the Radovna river thrashes loudly against its rocky confine, there are paths, galleries and bridges constructed in the rock. The trail runs through the 1600m long gorge.

The Radovna flows over cascades and rapids, and in clear pools it finds peace for a few moments. The Vintgar Gorge ends at the delightful Šum waterfall, the highest river fall in Slovenia. At the waterfall, the trail leaves the Radovna and rises up, heading south-east to the chapel of St. Catherine above Zasip. There you can experience one of the finest views over the entire area of Bled.

The Bohinj region with its unspoiled highmountain lake inspires visitors not only with the beauties of nature and ski centers Vogel, Kobla, and Soriška plani-na, but also with its rich ethnological heritage and many interesting cultural and sacral sites.
